On 25 October, Spanish manufacturing company Gamesa announced its plans to invest up to 130 million pounds (150 million euros) in the UK’s offshore wind energy industry by 2014.
Gamesa media representatives said the company expected to build a centre for offshore technology and construct one turbine blade manufacturing plant. In addition to basing the global headquarters of their offshore division in London, Gamesa plans to conduct its offshore business’ port logistics, turbine operation and maintenance services from different ports in the UK.
On the same day, UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced a £60 million government investment to develop port infrastructure needed for offshore wind projects and welcomed news of Gamesa’s investment plans.
“I want us to be a world leader in offshore wind energy. That’s why we’re committing public money to ensure we have the infrastructure that attracts major manufacturers to come here and build their offshore wind turbines. The commitment shown by companies like Gamesa who want to come to the UK and invest is good news for jobs and growth and good news our clean energy future. This announcement is very welcome indeed,” said Mr Cameron.
Gamesa media representatives added they expected to directly generate more than 1,000 jobs in the UK with their offshore wind energy investment. The company – present in the wind energy business for more than 15 years – has installed over 19,000 MW in 20 countries on four continents.
